Questions travellers ask

A record means a host has seen the Nyala on the property or nearby. It is never a guarantee of a sighting.

Which parks and reserves are best for the Nyala in South Africa?

Hosts on Spekboom have recorded the Nyala at stays in or beside Kruger National Park, Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Phinda Private Game Reserve, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and Welgevonden Game Reserve and other reserves. A record means a host has seen it on the property or nearby, which makes these the places to base yourself; it is never a guarantee of a sighting on any given day.

Where can you see the Nyala in South Africa?

The Nyala is most recorded in KwaZulu-Natal (41% of records), Limpopo (27% of records), Mpumalanga (18% of records), based on 4,150 iNaturalist observations. 48 places to stay on Spekboom in South Africa have recorded the Nyala on site or nearby.

When is the best time to see the Nyala?

The Nyala is recorded throughout the year, so no month is the wrong month to look for it. For the parks where hosts record it most, these are the best seasons they give. Kruger National Park: Apr-Sep; Sabi Sand Game Reserve: year-round, dry season May-Sep optimal; Phinda Private Game Reserve: year-round, dry season May-Sep; Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park: year-round, dry season May-Sep. In the dry months animals concentrate at water and the grass is short.

What is the Nyala?

The lowland nyala or simply nyala (Tragelaphus angasii), is a spiral-horned antelope native to Southern Africa. It is a species of the family Bovidae and genus Nyala, also considered to be in the genus Tragelaphus. It was first described in 1849 by George French Angas. The body length is 135-195 cm (53-77 in), and it weighs 55-140 kg (121-309 lb).
