Thornveld with rhino and buffalo in the Midlands
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Weenen Game Reserve is an Ezemvelo reserve in the thornveld near the town of Weenen, between Estcourt and the Tugela valley. Once degraded farmland, it was restored and now holds black and white rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland and kudu, with self-drive routes, walking trails and a hide at the dam. It is not a Big Five reserve, which makes it a relaxed place to walk, and it is malaria-free and within easy reach of the Drakensberg.
