Barrydale Hospice

Barrydale, Western Cape

Palliative Care improves the quality of life throughout the treatment of serious illness by providing practical, emotional and spiritual support. Hospice Care is a form of palliative care that focusses on relieving symptoms when someone living with a serious illness approaches the end of life. Barrydale Hospice was established in 2013, when a group of pioneering volunteers led by Sr Joanna, a palliative care specialist, began to address the lack of essential health services in the village, there being no doctor, pharmacy or general hospital. It was registered as an NPO in 2016 and has since been accredited as a Level 1 Hospice with the APCC – Association of Palliative Care Centre. The work has grown to provide hospice and palliative care in the village and surrounding farm areas, in an estimated population of 9000. Many patients are from vulnerable communities, living below the poverty line. Barrydale Hospice has recognised the escalating prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, HIV/Aids, TB, depression and substance abuse, and the need for more education, care and support surrounding these issues. Barrydale Hospice endeavours to constantly improve on reporting, data capture and analysis, and has been seeking innovative ways to improve palliative and basic health care. Currently employed are Sr Nickie Crookes, as the Barrydale Hospice Medical Manager, and four qualified home-based carers. HOW DOES ONE ACQUIRE OUR SERVICES? Patients are referred by doctors or family members and receive nursing care for medical conditions relating to terminal and debilitating illnesses. Family members are supported to provide on-going care and are in communication with the sister as necessary. Psychosocial counselling is provided, and practical or material assistance is given - for e.g. with grant applications or nutrition. Bereavement counselling and practical support around bereavement is provided. Four longstanding home carers undertake care services and are closely supervised by the sister through mentoring and training. All of them completed training in basic home-based palliative care.

Clean Trade is a grassroots initiative that transforms waste into opportunity, restoring dignity while promoting environmental awareness in Graaff-Reinet. Local community members, known as “traders”, collect rubbish from their neighbourhoods and bring it to Clean Trade on designated trading days, where they are assisted to sort it into recyclable components & trash. They receive tokens in proportion to all the waste brought, which they then use to purchase products from the Clean Trade Red Container. The container is stocked with basic food items, toiletries, stationery and pre-loved clothing.

Friends of Table Mountain

FoTM is a public forum for mountain users who are passionate about Table Mountain National Park (TMNP). Our primary purpose is to ensure the appropriate management of TMNP by the assigned management authority, South African National Parks (SANParks). Our goal is for our mountain to thrive in the best interests of ecology, recreational use and eco-tourism, and in keeping with the Park's founding principles of an urban national park. Our primary concern is safety and security on TMNP, and we will continue to lobby SANParks and other law enforcement agencies to provide better crime prevention. We also partner with a number of NPOs like the Sugarbird Project and The Helihack Initiative for invasive alien clearing on TMNP. In order to prevent further degradation of the trails on TMNP, we have employed a small team of keen trail workers who have been doing some fantastic work clearing and fixing trails. Our Trail Apostles have cleared more than 70 km of trail on TMNP. FOTM is registered as an NPO: Registration No.: 262-431 NPO. Friends of the Liesbeek

Friends of the Liesbeek (FoL) is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) committed to the long-term restoration, protection, and stewardship of the Liesbeek River corridor in Cape Town. Since 1991, FoL has worked to rehabilitate this ecologically significant urban river system through ongoing maintenance, ecological restoration, and community engagement. FoL supports the livelihoods of the Liesbeek Maintenance Project (LMP) team, who carry out daily on-the-ground restoration work, including invasive clearing, indigenous planting, litter removal, and wetland rehabilitation. The organisation also runs the Liesbeek Learning Project, an internship and skills-development programme for unemployed youth, providing environmental training and pathways into meaningful green-sector employment. Each year, the organisation works with schools, volunteers, civic groups, and corporate partners to increase connection and stewardship with this green corridor. Public activities include river clean-ups, planting days, environmental education, and collaborative restoration projects such as the Fynbos Snake and Wetland initiatives in Observatory.

The first facility in South Africa to successfully treat, rehabilitate and release rescued pangolins, JWVH cares for injured, orphaned, poisoned and trafficked animals — from birds and reptiles to antelope, carnivores, bats and Temminck’s pangolins. Lessons in Conservation (LiC)

Lessons in Conservation (LiC) is a youth-led environmental education non-profit company based in South Africa, with additional operating teams in Eswatini, Malawi, Tanzania and Rwanda. Our model focuses on empowering the youth of rural Africa, from a primary school level all the way through to university graduates. We strategically select partner universities in the areas that we work, and select a team of 9 individuals through an interviewing process (the first ever interview for most students). We then train these team members for their specific portfolios, ranging from finances and fundraising, to education and community relations. The goal is to equip our team members with valuable work experience within the conservation sector, something that is very difficult to find in rural Africa, in the hope that they will have more success finding jobs within the conservation and resource management sector. Although most positions are voluntary, we have found incredible commitment from each person working within our structures, as they slowly take ownership of the youth-led, pan-African movement they are now a part of. We now have over 140 young people working with us across Africa. The lessons we teach are essentially a sensitisation to ecology and wildlife conservation, as we strive to make conservation fun, getting the children out of the classroom as often as possible. These lessons are then followed up with an excursion into a wildlife area, so that they can see first hand the principles we have taught them in the classroom. For most, this is the first time they will ever see wildlife in their natural habitat. We started this organisation in 2018, still as a group of university students, with the goal of creating a platform to allow other young people to give of their time and resources for the betterment of the world around them. Over the past 7 years, we have given lessons to over 20,00 children across 11 African countries, and have gained many valuable insights along the way. Last year (2024) was the second year that we had any sort of meaningful funding, and we were able to deliver lessons to over 4800 children. Imagine how far we can go if we keep working for a better world - together.

Prince Albert Community Trust (PACT)

Prince Albert Community Trust was born out of need. In 2011, the founder, Ingrid Wolfaardt wrote a letter to the current mayor of the time, Goliath Lottering, asking the question: "Mr Lottering, the children of this town are dying of lack of vision, what are you, as the new custodian of this town going to do about it?" His reply, "Mrs Wolfaardt what are you planning to do about it?" was the beginning of PACT. Mr Lottering approached Ingrid in 2012 to establish a community trust for the town and surrounding area that would act as a bona fide vehicle for funding and support for community development projects. Today, PACT creates a space where diverse individuals unite for the greater good, balancing varied backgrounds and interests to benefit the community.

The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a leading seabird conservation organisation dedicated to saving threatened seabirds along the southern African coastline. Founded in 1968, SANCCOB has more than five decades of experience responding to seabird crises, from oil spills to chronic threats facing marine ecosystems, with a particular focus on the critically endangered African Penguin. As African Penguin populations continue to decline due to food scarcity, habitat disturbance and climate-related pressures, SANCCOB delivers direct, hands-on conservation interventions that have proven impact. This includes the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured, oiled and abandoned seabirds, giving thousands of birds a second chance at life each year. A cornerstone of SANCCOB's work is its pioneering Chick Rearing Unit, where abandoned and at-risk African Penguin chicks are removed from failing colonies, hand-reared under expert care, and released back into the wild once they are strong enough to survive. This intervention significantly increases chick survival rates and is a critical tool in preventing the species' extinction. Complementing this work, SANCCOB's ranger programme provides vital on-the-ground protection at key breeding colonies. Rangers monitor nests, protect eggs and chicks, reduce human disturbance, and respond rapidly to emerging threats, helping to stabilise breeding success in some of the most vulnerable colonies. Through a combination of emergency response, long-term conservation programmes, scientific research, advocacy and education, SANCCOB is working tirelessly to ensure a future for Africa's iconic seabirds and the marine ecosystems they depend on.
