Planning a trip around the cricket
A World Cup here is not a single-city trip. The host nations span roughly three thousand kilometres, the grounds sit in cities that are hours apart by air, and supporters who travel this far usually build two or three weeks around a block of matches rather than fly in for one.
That changes what you should book. Touring parties and families tend to do better taking a whole house or a farm cottage for a week than separate hotel rooms, particularly in the smaller host cities where hotel stock is thin. It also leaves room for the part of the trip that is not cricket: the reserves, the coast and the winelands are what people remember, and the rest days between matches are when you see them.

Where to stay near The Wanderers, Johannesburg
The Wanderers is the biggest ground in the tournament and sits in Illovo, between Sandton and Rosebank, which is the most walkable corner of Johannesburg and the easiest to reach on the Gautrain. Sandton, Rosebank, Parktown North and Melville all put you within 15 minutes of the ground.

Centurion sits between Johannesburg and Pretoria, with its own Gautrain station a short walk from the ground. That makes it the one venue you can comfortably base yourself in either city for, and the reason many touring parties stay put here for a run of matches.

Newlands sits under the back of Table Mountain in the southern suburbs, and it is the ground most visiting supporters want to see. Claremont, Rondebosch and Kenilworth are all within walking or short-taxi distance, and the Atlantic seaboard and the City Bowl are 20 minutes away when there is no match on.

Boland Park is in the Cape Winelands, an hour from Cape Town, and it is the most pleasant place in the tournament to spend a week. Paarl, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Wellington are all within half an hour of the ground, and the wine estates are the reason to stay out here rather than commute from the city.

Kingsmead is a few hundred metres from the beachfront, which is unusual for a Test ground and very good news if you are travelling with family. The promenade is walkable, Umhlanga and Ballito are 20 to 40 minutes north, and the Drakensberg and the game reserves of Zululand are both within a morning of the city.

Where to stay near St George's Park, Gqeberha
St George's Park is South Africa's oldest Test ground, sitting in the middle of the city inside its namesake park, and the one with the brass band. Summerstrand puts you on the beach 10 minutes away, and Addo Elephant National Park is an hour inland, which makes this the easiest venue in the tournament to pair a match with a malaria-free safari.

Bloemfontein sits almost exactly halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. If you are driving between fixtures it is the natural overnight, and the eastern Free State and the Golden Gate Highlands are a comfortable detour.

Buffalo Park is close to the beachfront in KuGompo City, the Eastern Cape port long known as East London. It is the gateway to the Wild Coast, so it works well as the end of a coastal drive up from Gqeberha rather than as a flying visit.

Harare Sports Club is in the middle of the capital, and the ground has the reputation of being one of the most pleasant to watch cricket at anywhere, with shade trees on the grass banks. The northern suburbs are where most visitors stay.

Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second city and the base for the Matobo Hills, which are under an hour south, and for Hwange National Park further west. For most visitors the cricket is one part of a Zimbabwe loop rather than the whole trip.

A new ground built for this tournament on the edge of Victoria Falls town, and the one venue where the surroundings will outrank the cricket for most visitors. The falls, the Zambezi and Hwange are all here, and it is the natural place to build in rest days.

Where to stay near Namibia Cricket Ground, Windhoek
Namibia's first purpose-built international ground, opened in Windhoek in October 2025. Windhoek is the base for anything in Namibia, and most visitors use it as the start or end of a self-drive rather than a stay in its own right. Sossusvlei and the Namib are a long day south, Etosha a long day north.
