Led by veterinarian Dr Karin Lourens together with co-director Wendy Willson, who has extensive experience in wildlife welfare advocacy, conservation education and legal processes relating to animal protection and wildlife crime, JWVH is supported by a highly experienced team of wildlife rehabilitation professionals, animal carers, conservationists and tertiary-trained specialists.

Every animal admitted to the hospital undergoes a comprehensive rehabilitation process aimed at achieving the highest possible standard of welfare and successful release back into a suitable natural environment. JWVH works closely with conservation authorities, law enforcement, veterinarians, researchers, rehabilitation centres, pilots, transport networks, universities and conservation organisations across southern Africa to ensure the best outcomes for wildlife in need.

The team also plays an important role in wildlife crime investigations and conservation law enforcement — regularly assisting with expert veterinary assessments, welfare reports, forensic documentation, legal case support and court testimony in matters involving animal cruelty, illegal wildlife trade, poisoning incidents and permit violations.

Education, collaboration and public awareness form a core part of the JWVH mission, supporting veterinary and conservation students through structured internships and training opportunities, and engaging with schools, universities, researchers and the public to promote ethical wildlife conservation, animal welfare and environmental stewardship.
