Stanford and the whale coast

Southern right whales come into Walker Bay from June to November, close enough to watch from the cliff path in Hermanus. Stanford is the quiet village across the lagoon, with the Klein River running past the end of the village.

Out of whale season the river, the fynbos reserves and the birds are the reason to stop.

About 450 km along the N2 to Knysna, a long day: break it in Swellendam
Fly George to Kruger Mpumalanga, usually through Johannesburg, about half a day

Questions people ask

Is two weeks enough for South Africa?

For a first trip, yes, if you choose two regions rather than five. This plan gives the Cape ten nights and the bushveld four.

When is the best time to go?

September to April suits the whole route: the Cape is warm and dry from November, and the Lowveld is green with young animals from late November. May to September is the dry season in Kruger, when the bush thins and game gathers at water, and the whale season on the Cape coast, but the Cape itself is cool and can be wet.

Is the route malaria-free?

The Cape, the whale coast and the Garden Route are malaria-free. Kruger and the Lowveld are a malaria area, highest in the wet summer months. Speak to a travel clinic before you go, or ask us for the malaria-free family journey, which swaps Kruger for the Eastern Cape.

How is the journey priced?

For your dates and your party. Several of these stays only quote on request, so we check every night with the hosts and send one priced plan, with flights, car hire and park fees set out alongside the stays.
