Bushveld game country and the southern gates of the Kruger
See places that give backThese are the stays that sit inside a national park or a protected reserve, rather than near one. It is a bigger difference than it sounds. Inside the fence you are in the reserve from the moment you arrive: game moves through camp, the sounds at night are the real thing, and you are not driving in at gate opening and out again before it closes.
The trade is that you live by the park’s rules. Gates open and close at set times, most parks do not allow off-road driving, and night drives run with the park’s own guides. Private reserves outside a park boundary often permit what the park does not. Neither is better, and the right answer depends on whether you want the rules or the access.
Every stay here has been recorded as inside a protected area by the park or reserve it belongs to. Check the individual listing for gate times before you book a late arrival.
The property sits within the boundary of a proclaimed national park, nature reserve or protected area, rather than on land next to it. You are inside the reserve for your whole stay, not visiting it during the day.
Inside gives you more hours in the reserve and no gate run at dawn and dusk. Outside, on a private reserve, often gives you off-road driving and night drives the park does not permit, and there is usually more choice of lodge. They are different holidays, and price does not reliably separate them.
Yes, and this is the one that catches people. Most parks close their gates at sunset and will not admit you afterwards. If your flight lands late, check the gate time on the listing and plan the first night accordingly.
You will have more time in the reserve, which helps, but no stay guarantees a sighting. Animals move with the season, the water and the weather.
