Coastal forest on the Tugela River, with battlefield history
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Harold Johnson Nature Reserve is a small Ezemvelo reserve on the southern bank of the Tugela River near its mouth, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. Coastal forest and grassland shelter small antelope, zebra and a wealth of birds and butterflies, and trails lead to Fort Pearson and the Ultimatum Tree, where the ultimatum that began the Anglo-Zulu War was delivered in 1878. A campsite and simple accommodation make it a quiet stop off the N2.
