About this place
Tongabezi Lodge sits on a hidden, tranquil stretch of the Zambezi River, 12 km upstream of Victoria Falls. It began more than thirty years ago as a few tents with bucket showers and has grown into one of Zambia's best-known lodges, named by Condé Nast among the top hotels in the world, without losing the intimacy that made its name.
Guests stay in five River Cottages and a collection of individually designed Houses, each with its own valet and interiors gathered from around Africa. The Honeymoon House has a plunge pool and an open-air bath over the river; the Bird House hangs on a deck above the water; the Nut House steps down to an infinity plunge pool; and the Tree House is built around the boughs of an ancient ebony, open to the river on every side. For families and friends, the Garden House has two en-suite bedrooms around its own garden and pool, and the two-bedroom Dog House, raised above the riverbank, comes with a private boat and game drive vehicle.
Days follow the river: sunrise and sunset boat trips, picnics on a private island, fishing, walks in the gorge below the Falls, a game drive in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and a visit to Victoria Falls from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides. Every stay includes a visit to Livingstone Island at the edge of the Falls.
Tongabezi is deeply rooted in its community. The Tujatane School, the Tongabezi Trust and a farm run with the Mukuni community are part of the stay, and guests are welcome to visit them.

Five River Cottages carry Tongabezi's African-fusion style: high ceilings, large bespoke wood and glass windows, and doors that open onto broad decks over the Zambezi. Each has an en-suite bathroom and its own valet, and dinner can be served on the private deck. They suit couples, or a group that wants to be together while keeping its own space.

Perched on a suspended deck on a cliff above the Zambezi, the Bird House has a king-size four-poster with a bird-themed headboard, a small indoor lounge and folding doors onto a private terrace and plunge pool. A claw-foot bath stands outdoors beside the river. There is space for an extra single bed.

An enclosed, open-plan house on two levels hidden in the riverine trees, lit with Moroccan lanterns. The four-poster bed sits on the upper level above a lounge, dining area and an en-suite bathroom with a claw-foot tub, and folding doors open onto a raised river deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Built around the boughs of an ancient ebony tree and set into the basalt cliff, the Tree House has no walls: it opens onto the Zambezi on every side under a thatched roof. A canopied king bed, lounge, reading corner and private dining area flow into an open-plan bathroom with a claw-foot tub facing the river.

Set back from the river for privacy, the Garden House has two en-suite bedrooms, a dining room and lounge, and a large covered veranda opening onto its own garden and plunge pool. It suits families and friends who want room to spread out; there is space for an extra single bed in the double room. A minimum of two adults applies.

Its own private world at the edge of the garden: three decks joined by elevated walkways, two bedrooms (one king, one king or twin; an extra single fits either room), a central indoor and outdoor lounge, dining area, bar, double-sided fireplace and plunge pool, all raised above the riverbank. A private game drive vehicle and boat are included. A minimum of two adults applies.
