See places that give backKwaZulu-Natal packs more habitats into one province than anywhere else in South Africa. The Drakensberg rises to high grassland and cliffs, the Midlands roll through wetlands and mistbelt forest, and Zululand runs down to coastal forest, sand forest and the wetlands of iSimangaliso.
That range is why birders come: grassland cranes and larks in the uplands, raptors on the escarpment, and in Zululand a run of forest and tropical species that reach their southern limit here. The stays on this page are hosts who manage their land with birds in mind.
Summer, from November to March, brings the migrants and the breeding colours. The coast is warm year round.
Zululand and the iSimangaliso wetlands for forest and coastal species, the Midlands for wetlands and grassland, and the Drakensberg for high-altitude birds and raptors.
November to March for the migrants and breeding birds.
The species on a listing are what the host has recorded on or near the property. Birds move with the season and the weather, so treat a list as what is possible, not what is promised.
