About this route
This is the route for travellers who plan a holiday around a bird list. It starts in Wakkerstroom, the high grassland village where BirdLife South Africa runs its own tourism and education centre and community guides know which wet grassland holds Rudd's Lark, Botha's Lark and Yellow-breasted Pipit. From there the road runs north along the escarpment: the trout highlands at Dullstroom, the long drop to the Lowveld at Hoedspruit with its vulture colonies and raptor country, then up again into the Magoebaskloof mist-belt, where Cape Parrot and Narina Trogon call from Afromontane forest.
