About South Luangwa National Park
South Luangwa is Zambia's flagship park, the valley of the Luangwa River in the east of the country, and the birthplace of the walking safari, which Norman Carr pioneered here in the 1950s. It is known for leopard, seen more reliably than almost anywhere, for the river's hippo and crocodile, for night drives, and for the ox-bow lagoons and ebony groves of the floodplain. Elephant, lion, buffalo and wild dog are all present; there are no rhino. The camps range from bush camps to lodges around Mfuwe, reached by flight from Lusaka, and the dry season from about June to October is the classic time, with the green season offering birds and lower prices. It is a malaria area.
