About this place
Dempsey's Guest House is a long-running, family-owned self-catering guest house in Walmer, the leafy suburb at the centre of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The Dempsey family has been running this licensed establishment since 2007, with the owner-managers living on site — it's the kind of place where service consistency and personal attention matter more than scale.
Five comfortably laid-out rooms sit across a large bird-filled garden, each with its own private entrance, en-suite bathroom and kitchenette. The rooms are stand-alone — no inter-leading walls — and offer a quiet, private base for travellers. The property runs on a heat-pump water system with solar inverter backup (so load-shedding rarely interrupts the Wi-Fi), and rainwater is harvested for the laundry. Family Room 2 is wheelchair friendly with a ramp from the car park, a roll-in shower and proper grab rails.
The location works for both work and leisure travel: the airport is a short drive away, beaches are 7 km, and the suburb is dense with restaurants, bakeries, pubs and shops within walking distance — Boccadillos, Chingadas, Cobblestone Bakery, The Hussar Grill, the 6th Avenue Shopping Centre, Spar and several cafés are all within 500 m – 2 km. Life St George's Hospital and Netcare Akeso are also nearby.
Dempsey's offers complimentary uncapped Wi-Fi in every room, on-site secured parking (including for medium trailers), OpenView decoders, and tourism information for the rest of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape. The owners are environmentally aware — no pesticides in the garden, energy-saving lighting, paper / tin / glass / plastic recycling, and water-smart practices throughout. No pets, no smoking and no laundry service.
