About Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is the largest and most famous park in Tanzania, a World Heritage Site of open plains and acacia woodland where around 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra circle the ecosystem all year. Where they are depends on the month: calving on the southern plains around Ndutu from about December to March, the move north through the western corridor from May, the Grumeti and Mara river crossings in the north from about July to October, and the return south with the rains in November. Lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and a small rhino population make it Big Five. It is reached by air to its airstrips or by road from Arusha, and it is a malaria area.
