About this place
Somalisa Camp sits under the dappled shade of an acacia grove in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest park and one of the most wildlife-rich corners of southern Africa, with healthy populations of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog. Its best-known feature is the Elephant Pool, a waterhole right beside the main area where herds come to drink within a few metres of guests.
There are seven tented suites, each with a wood-burning fireplace, a copper slipper bath, a king-size bed, indoor and outdoor showers and a private viewing deck. The main area has a bar, a swimming pool looking onto the Elephant Pool, a fire pit and a shared lounge, decorated in kudhinda, a local Zimbabwean fabric.
Activities include game drives, walking safaris, birding and cultural visits, and the Somalisa Sleep-Out, a treehouse over a waterhole 25 minutes from camp, can be added from August to November. The camp runs entirely on solar power, recycles 80% of its water, and was the first in Zimbabwe to receive Gold Green Tourism certification. It is one of the camps run by African Bush Camps, a Zimbabwean-founded safari company whose Foundation works on education, community and conservation projects in the areas around its camps.
