About this place
There is something quite magical about this striking Victorian Manor House, lovingly restored over many years by Richard and Alison Walker and run by their own hands and hearts. Set on the edge of historic Swellendam at the foot of the Langeberg, Schoone Oordt is a small luxury country hotel that feels like a friend's country home — gracious, slightly mischievous, and quietly proud of its place in one of South Africa's oldest towns.
Eleven individually appointed bedrooms are scattered across the property: eight Luxury Rooms in the manor and outbuildings, a romantic Honeymoon Suite tucked away beyond the gardens, a spacious Family Suite, and a private Family Cottage with its own walkway and child-friendly loft. Each is dressed with restored antiques (most of them by Richard himself), open fireplaces, crisp linens, and air conditioning — a Victorian skin over thoroughly modern comforts.
The heart of the property is The Conservatory, an English-style glasshouse restaurant that opens onto the gardens and the saltwater pool. Breakfast, lunch and a four-course dinner are served daily, with menus that lean into Overberg producers. There is a cosy fire-lit bar and lounge, a country kitchen guests are encouraged to kuier in, and a fountain courtyard for slow afternoons.
Swellendam itself sits on the R62 / Garden Route axis, two and a half hours from Cape Town and an easy day-trip to Hermanus, De Hoop, the Breede River wine farms, and the Marloth Nature Reserve. Schoone Oordt is the kind of place that turns one night on the way into three — relaxed, unpretentious, deeply hospitable, and richly worth the detour.
