About this place
Orpen is a small rest camp on the central western boundary of the Kruger National Park, sitting right at the gate of the same name. Its size and its setting in the dry open plains give it the unhurried restfulness that is so characteristic of the bushveld, with tall acacias and marula trees among the huts and small rock gardens of aloes and Barberton daisies between them.
The surrounding country offers excellent game viewing. The drive from Orpen towards Satara passes herds of zebra and wildebeest, with giraffe, impala, warthog and elephant common along the way, while the road north towards the Timbavati river is good for lion, cheetah and leopard.
The camp is self-catering, with a shop, communal kitchens, a laundromat, a swimming pool and a filling station, though there is no restaurant. Guided bush walks and game drives can be booked at reception, and there are picnic sites at Timbavati and elsewhere nearby.
Orpen as SANParks lays it out. Choose the part of camp you would like; we ask for it when you request availability, and SANParks assigns the unit when they confirm.
Where would you like to be?
Schematic, not to scale.
What the codes mean
SANParks names every unit by a code. The letters say what it is, the number says how many it sleeps, and any letters after that mark a view, an accessible unit or a perimeter position. Tap a code for that room's rates and photos.
Marula and knobthorn woodland at the western gate, with the Timbavati riverbed a short drive north.
56 birds recorded here or nearby, including 8 of conservation concern. Tap a bird for stays where it has been recorded and its field notes.
Nothing is hidden, in-season birds simply move to the front. Months come from national records, not from this garden.

These are records, not promises. Wild birds and animals move, so sightings are never guaranteed.
