About this place
Orpen is a small rest camp on the central western boundary of the Kruger National Park, sitting right at the gate of the same name. Its size and its setting in the dry open plains give it the unhurried restfulness that is so characteristic of the bushveld, with tall acacias and marula trees among the huts and small rock gardens of aloes and Barberton daisies between them.
The surrounding country offers excellent game viewing. The drive from Orpen towards Satara passes herds of zebra and wildebeest, with giraffe, impala, warthog and elephant common along the way, while the road north towards the Timbavati river is good for lion, cheetah and leopard.
The camp is self-catering, with a shop, communal kitchens, a laundromat, a swimming pool and a filling station, though there is no restaurant. Guided bush walks and game drives can be booked at reception, and there are picnic sites at Timbavati and elsewhere nearby.
