About this place
Glen Reenen lies in the heart of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the eastern Free State, where the grasslands of the high Maluti foothills meet dramatic sandstone cliffs. The camp takes its setting from the golden and ochre rock formations that glow in the late afternoon light, the feature that gives the park its name, with the Little Caledon River running close by.
This is high-altitude montane country rather than classic bushveld, and the appeal is the scenery and the walking. Trails lead up into the sandstone buttresses and onto the grassy plateaus, where eland, blesbok, springbok and zebra graze and bearded vulture and black eagle are sometimes seen overhead. A natural rock pool in the river offers a cool dip in summer.
The camp offers a range of chalets and a campsite, making it a comfortable base for hikers, families and travellers exploring the Free State highlands and the nearby Basotho cultural sites.
