Golden Gate Hotel and Chalets is the main accommodation in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, set in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the eastern Free State. The park takes its name from the spectacular sandstone formations that glow gold and amber in the late afternoon light, and the camp is hemmed in by these towering cliffs and rolling montane grasslands. This is high-altitude country rather than classic bushveld, and the appeal lies in its scenery, crisp mountain air and walking. Black wildebeest, blesbok, eland, springbok and Burchell's zebra graze the grassy slopes, while the cliffs are home to raptors, including the rare bearded vulture and the bald ibis. Winters can be cold, with occasional snow on the peaks. The hotel and chalets offer a comfortable base with a restaurant and the usual facilities, and the park is well suited to hiking, scenic drives and quiet days surrounded by some of the most striking landscapes in the country.
Highlands Mountain Retreat is set high in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, in the rolling grasslands and sandstone country of the eastern Free State. The park is named for the golden light that falls on its dramatic sandstone cliffs and buttresses, and the retreat sits among open mountain scenery at the foot of the Maluti range. The accommodation has a self-catering character suited to walkers and those who want a quiet base in the high country. Cool, clear air and sweeping views define the setting, and the surrounding grasslands are home to eland, black wildebeest, blesbok and zebra, while the cliffs above shelter raptors including the rare bearded vulture. This is a place for slow days spent on mountain trails and evenings watching the sandstone glow at sunset. The altitude brings crisp nights, and winters can be cold, so the retreat suits travellers drawn to open landscapes rather than classic bushveld game viewing.
Glen Reenen lies in the heart of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the eastern Free State, where the grasslands of the high Maluti foothills meet dramatic sandstone cliffs. The camp takes its setting from the golden and ochre rock formations that glow in the late afternoon light, the feature that gives the park its name, with the Little Caledon River running close by. This is high-altitude montane country rather than classic bushveld, and the appeal is the scenery and the walking. Trails lead up into the sandstone buttresses and onto the grassy plateaus, where eland, blesbok, springbok and zebra graze and bearded vulture and black eagle are sometimes seen overhead. A natural rock pool in the river offers a cool dip in summer. The camp offers a range of chalets and a campsite, making it a comfortable base for hikers, families and travellers exploring the Free State highlands and the nearby Basotho cultural sites.
Manyoni Private Game Reserve is one of the largest privately-owned reserves in Kwazulu-Natal. This 23,000-hectare reserve is the product of 17 dedicated landowners who dropped their fences in 2004 to create one contiguous protected area for our wildlife. The selection of the area as a potential release site for the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project was a major driving factor in the establishment of Manyoni. In 2005, the newly established reserve was confirmed as a release site by the WWF and a founder population of black rhino were released into their new home.
