Bontebok Rest Camp

Bontebok Rest Camp lies within Bontebok National Park, just south of Swellendam in the Western Cape, set on the banks of the Breede River beneath the Langeberg mountains. The park is the smallest of South Africa's national parks and was established to protect the bontebok, an antelope that was once reduced to a tiny remnant population and now grazes the renosterveld and grassy plains in healthy numbers.

The river is the heart of the camp, with a stretch of clear water good for swimming, canoeing and fishing, and a fringe of indigenous trees that draws abundant birdlife. Cape mountain zebra, grey rhebok, red hartebeest and grey duiker share the reserve with the bontebok, and the fynbos is at its most striking in spring.

The chalets and campsites are simple and well placed for a restful river stay, with easy access to the mountain scenery and the historic town of Swellendam close by.
