About this place
Dorp sits on the slopes of Signal Hill at the top of Longmarket Street, above the Bo-Kaap, looking across the city to Table Mountain. Built on the footprint of the old Noon Gun Tea Room, it is less a single building than a small village of houses, cottages and garden rooms joined by winding paths, stairs and edible gardens that seem to have grown as they pleased. Birds chatter in the trees, fires are lit early in winter, and there is usually something good cooking in the kitchen.
No two of the 38 rooms are the same. They differ in size, shape, light and view, and are grouped by price from Classic Rooms of 24 to 47 m², many with their own kitchen and access to a shared plunge pool, through Superior Rooms and Classic and Gallery Suites with balconies and mountain views, to Deluxe Suites with glass fronts and private verandas. The two Companion Suites have two bedrooms each, and the two Grand Suites are Rose Cottage, a free-standing suite with its own narrow pool, steam room and rooftop terrace, and the Rooftop Suite, with a private roof garden looking over the city and the sea. Every room has air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a coffee maker, a TV, wi-fi and turn-down service.
Breakfast is served in the Salon, a light-filled room with views of Table Mountain, which is also open for lunch and dinner. Dorp has no liquor licence, so guests bring their own wine, with no corkage charged. There is a gym looking down over the city, a small sauna and a treatment room, and two shops by the Ella Street entrance sell Dorp-made and hand-picked things. The Palm House, with a demonstration kitchen, and the Games Room host small events.
Dorp is for adults and children over 12, and with its many stairs and levels it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Parking on the hill is limited, so the hotel suggests arriving by taxi or transfer. The Bo-Kaap, the V&A Waterfront and the city centre are all close by.
