About this place
Marloth Nature Reserve is tucked into the imposing Swellendam Mountains, bordered by Swellendam, Ashton, Barrydale and Suurbraak. The peaceful 14,123 hectare reserve, managed together with a further 16,532 hectares of private land, is a World Heritage Site and protects pristine mountain fynbos, deep kloofs and clear mountain streams.
It is best known as the home of the five-day Swellendam Trail, one of the Cape's classic circular hikes, along with shorter day walks to waterfalls and viewpoints. Swellendam itself is the third-oldest town in South Africa, with plenty of cultural and historic interest a short drive away.
Self-catering accommodation includes the Bushbuck Cottage, comfortable for a family or small group, and the compact Suikerbekkie. Both make an easy base for hikers and for travellers exploring the Overberg and the Route 62 country.
