This is conservation travel without the jargon: every stay on this page is linked to a named conservation or community cause in South Africa, and a share of each booking goes to it. You can see the cause on the listing before you book.

The causes are real organisations doing specific work: the Cape Leopard Trust in the mountains, SANCCOB for penguins and seabirds, the Endangered Wildlife Trust across the country, BirdLife South Africa for birds and wetlands, and community and education projects near the stays. Many of the stays are themselves on land kept wild because visitors pay to be there.

Questions travellers ask

What is conservation or eco travel?

Travel where your stay helps protect the place you visit, by funding a conservation cause, keeping land wild or supporting the community that looks after it.

How do I know where my money goes?

Each listing names its cause. A share of every booking goes to that cause, and the cause page shows what it does.

Can I volunteer with these causes?

Spekboom does not place volunteers, but many of these causes run their own programmes. Our conservation travel guide explains how to choose one well.
