About Vredefort Dome

The Vredefort Dome is the eroded centre of the largest and oldest meteorite impact structure yet found on earth, about two billion years old and originally some 300 kilometres across. It is a World Heritage Site in the Free State and North West near Parys, on the Vaal River, and the visible evidence is a ring of hills, granite outcrops and shatter cones rather than a crater. Guided geology tours explain what you are looking at. Parys is the base, with river rafting, mountain biking, and guesthouses along the Vaal, and the whole area is malaria-free.
