Mountain gorillas in the Virunga volcanoes
Northern Province, Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is one of the few places in the world to see mountain gorillas, and habituated families are visited on permitted treks of an hour or two in small groups; golden monkey treks and hikes to the Dian Fossey research site are also offered. Gorilla permits are limited and expensive, and fund conservation and the communities around the park. Lodges sit on the park boundary near Kinigi and Musanze.
