About Shamwari Game Reserve
Shamwari is a 25,000-hectare Big Five reserve in the Eastern Cape, an hour from Gqeberha, and the reserve that started the region's private safari industry when it opened in 1992 on former farmland. It is malaria-free, lodge-based with guided drives, and it runs two wildlife rehabilitation centres and a Born Free big-cat sanctuary that guests can visit. Elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard are all present, along with cheetah and a strong bird list in the thicket and river valleys. It pairs with Addo and the end of the Garden Route.
