A seasonal pan and birding coast north of Velddrif
Western Cape, South Africa
Rocherpan is a small CapeNature reserve on the West Coast north of Velddrif, built around a seasonal vlei that fills in winter and draws large numbers of waterbirds, from flamingos and pelicans to ducks and waders. Bird hides look over the pan, and a marine protected area runs along the beach in front of it. In late winter and spring the strandveld flowers, and whales pass offshore. Accommodation is a handful of cabins beside the pan, which makes it one of the quietest places to stay on the West Coast.
