About Majete Wildlife Reserve
Majete is the reserve that showed what restoration could do: by 2003 it had been poached almost empty, and since African Parks took it on that year it has been restocked into a Big Five reserve on the Shire River in southern Malawi, with lion, elephant, black rhino, buffalo and leopard, and no poaching of rhino or elephant since. It is miombo and riverine woodland, hot in the valley, with a lodge and a community-run campsite, and game viewing that improves every year. It is a malaria area, about 70 kilometres from Blantyre.
