Dunes, forest and the Groenvlei lake on the Garden Route
Western Cape, South Africa
Goukamma is a CapeNature reserve on the Garden Route between Sedgefield and Knysna, where some of the highest vegetated dunes on the coast meet milkwood forest, a long wild beach and Groenvlei, a freshwater lake with no link to the sea. The Goukamma River runs through it to a quiet estuary. It is a walking and paddling reserve: beach and dune trails, canoeing on the river, fishing and good birding around the lake. Accommodation ranges from river and forest lodges at Buffalo Valley to bush camps and cottages, and the towns of the Garden Route are a short drive away.
