About Durban Botanic Gardens
Durban Botanic Gardens is the oldest surviving botanic garden in Africa, founded in 1849 near the city centre and still run by the municipality. It is known for its cycad collection, including specimens of the near-extinct Wood's cycad, an orchid house, and big subtropical trees that make it a shaded refuge in the city's heat. The garden hosts open-air concerts and is a reliable place to see Durban's garden birds and fruit bats at dusk. It is a morning's visit rather than a destination, easily combined with a stay on the Berea or the beachfront.
