About Dinokeng Game Reserve
Dinokeng is the only free-roaming Big Five reserve inside a South African province's metropolitan area, about forty minutes north of Pretoria. It was formed in 2011 by landowners taking down internal fences, and it remains a patchwork of private lodges, self-catering houses and small camps around a shared reserve. That makes it the most accessible real safari from Johannesburg: elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard, malaria-free, with a public self-drive route and guided drives from the lodges. It is a good first safari for families with young children and a practical weekend for anyone based in Gauteng.
