About Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area
Aliwal Shoal is a fossilised sand dune lying about five kilometres off Umkomaas on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, and one of the best-known dive sites in the world. Ragged-tooth sharks gather on the reef from roughly June to November, tiger sharks are the draw of the baited dives in summer, and humpback whales pass close inshore on their winter migration. The marine protected area restricts fishing and limits diver numbers on the most sensitive sections. Umkomaas and Scottburgh are the launch towns; both have dive operators and beach accommodation, and the sardine run passes this stretch of coast most years in June or July.
