About this place
Augrabies Falls Rest Camp sits above the gorge of the Orange River in the arid Northern Cape, within a stark and beautiful landscape of granite domes, quiver trees and stretches of red Kalahari sand. The camp takes its name from the falls themselves, where the river funnels through a narrow ravine and plunges some fifty-six metres into a deep granite chasm. Viewing platforms and boardwalks lead to vantage points along the gorge, and the sound of the water carries through the camp.
The surrounding country is harsh but full of life. Klipspringer pick their way across the rocks, while the park is home to giraffe, gemsbok, springbok and the occasional black rhino. The Verreaux's eagle and pale chanting goshawk are among the birds that patrol the cliffs.
Accommodation ranges from chalets to cottages, and the camp has a restaurant, shop and swimming pool, which is welcome relief in the fierce summer heat. It makes a comfortable base for walking trails and for following the river road through the reserve.
