About this place
Set deep in the Kamberg Valley on the western edge of the Drakensberg, Qambathi Mountain Lodge is an exclusive, adults-only mountain retreat just two hours from Pietermaritzburg. Up to 16 guests share two distinct spaces: a fully catered four-star lodge of five luxury suites, and a separate three-bedroom self-catering homestead set a little apart.
Each lodge suite is built around natural textures, handmade Camphor super-king beds, freestanding baths, and a private deck with hanging chairs. Air conditioning, electric blankets, blackout curtains, plush robes, Nespresso machines, in-room safes and uncapped Wi-Fi run through every room. The Chill Lounge, wine cellar, and pool deck pull the days together — slow afternoons, panoramic mountain views, sunset drinks — and a nightly five-course dinner is served, with Vegetarian, Vegan, and Halaal options on request.
The Homestead sleeps six across three bedrooms (King, Queen, Twin) and has its own wood-fired hot tub, two fireplaces, full kitchen, smart TV, and braai patio. Unlike the lodge it is pet-friendly and welcomes guests of all ages, making it ideal for families or small private groups travelling together.
There is plenty to do without leaving the property — guided hikes, trout fishing, bird safaris, horse interaction, spa treatments, stargazing decks, and pre-bookable wine, gin or beer tastings. The wider area opens up the rest of the Drakensberg: the Bushman rock paintings at Game Pass Shelter, the Midlands Meander, Sani Pass, golf at the Champagne Valley courses, and mountain biking and helicopter trips on request.
Qambathi is owner-managed by Stephen Maritz. The focus is on quiet, unhurried hospitality — the kind of stay that leaves you wishing you'd booked an extra night.
