Questions des voyageurs

Hosts on Spekboom have recorded the Common Ringed Plover at stays in or beside Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, Rocherpan Nature Reserve, Kruger National Park, De Hoop Nature Reserve, iSimangaliso Wetland Park and De Mond Nature Reserve and other reserves. A record means a host has seen it on the property or nearby, which makes these the places to base yourself; it is never a guarantee of a sighting on any given day.

Where can you see the Common Ringed Plover in South Africa?

The Common Ringed Plover is most recorded in Western Cape (57% of records), KwaZulu-Natal (23% of records), Eastern Cape (12% of records), based on 822 iNaturalist observations. 27 places to stay on Spekboom in South Africa have recorded the Common Ringed Plover on site or nearby.

When is the best time to see the Common Ringed Plover?

The Common Ringed Plover is recorded throughout the year, so no month is the wrong month to look for it. For the parks where hosts record it most, these are the best seasons they give. Kwandwe Private Game Reserve: year-round, best Mar-May, Sep-Nov; Rocherpan Nature Reserve: Winter and spring for birds and flowers, Jun-Oct; Kruger National Park: Apr-Sep; De Hoop Nature Reserve: Sep-Apr, flowers Aug-Oct. In the dry months animals concentrate at water and the grass is short.

What is the Common Ringed Plover?

The common ringed plover or ringed plover (Charadrius hiaticula) is a small plover that breeds in Arctic Eurasia. The genus name Charadrius is a Late Latin word for a yellowish bird mentioned in the fourth-century Vulgate. It derives from Ancient Greek kharadrios a bird found in ravines and river valleys (kharadra, "ravine").
