The Litterboom Project is a South African nonprofit dedicated to preventing plastic pollution from reaching the ocean by targeting upstream sources, as 80% of ocean plastic originates from rivers and coastlines. TLP installs river interception systems, known as “litter booms,” to capture plastic before it reaches marine ecosystems. To date, TLP has successfully removed over 2.5 million kilograms of environmental waste.
Beyond interception, TLP fosters a circular waste ecosystem, creating economic opportunities for local communities through waste reclaiming, upcycling, education, and community engagement, demonstrating a replicable model for environmental and social impact.
