Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa is the most ambitious restoration project in Africa: a park in central Mozambique that lost around 95 percent of its large mammals in the civil war and has been rebuilt since 2004 through a partnership between the government and the Gorongosa Project, with wildlife numbers now back above 100,000. Elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo and huge herds of waterbuck fill the Rift Valley floodplain around Lake Urema, and leopard, wild dog and hyena have been reintroduced. The park runs a science laboratory, a girls' education programme and a coffee project on Mount Gorongosa. The camp at Chitengo is the base, and the season is May to October; it is a malaria area.
