About Gariep Nature Reserve
The Gariep Nature Reserve lies on the northern shore of the Gariep Dam, the largest reservoir in the country, on the Orange River between the Free State and the Eastern Cape. It is a Karoo reserve of plains and koppies with springbok, black wildebeest, Cape mountain zebra and a long waterbird list where the dam meets the veld. The dam is the attraction for most visitors, with fishing, boating and the dam wall itself, and the reserve offers self-catering chalets and camping. It sits on the N1 roughly halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town, which makes it a natural overnight stop.
