Conservation travel in South Africa: stays that protect the places you visit

What nature-based and conservation travel means in practice, the causes our stays fund, and how to volunteer well

Updated

Conservation travel means your holiday does some of the work of protecting the place you came to see. In South Africa that is not abstract: much of the wild land outside the national parks is private, and whether it stays wild depends on whether people pay to stay on it.

Every stay on Spekboom is tied to a named conservation or community cause, and a share of each booking goes to it. This guide explains what to look for in a nature-based trip, introduces the causes our stays support, and ends with an honest note on volunteering.

What makes a trip conservation travel

Look at where the money goes and what the land is used for. A private reserve that rewilded old farmland, a community-owned lodge, a farm that keeps its wetland and its indigenous bush: each turns visitors into the reason the land stays wild.

Be wary of anything that puts you in contact with wild animals for the photograph. Cub petting, walking with lions and close encounters with captive predators are tied to the captive-breeding industry, which conservation organisations in South Africa campaign against. Seeing an animal in the wild, at its own distance, is the experience worth paying for.

Leopards in the mountains

The Cape Leopard Trust studies and protects the leopards of the Cape mountains, which survive on the edges of farmland and are rarely seen. Stays linked to the Trust fund that research and its work with farmers to reduce conflict.

Volunteering: how to do it well

Spekboom does not run volunteer programmes. If you want to volunteer, go to the organisations themselves: many of the causes named on our stays run their own programmes or know who does, and that is the surest way to know your time and money reach the work.

Choose programmes run by registered conservation or research organisations, ask what a volunteer actually does and what the fee pays for, and avoid any programme that offers hands-on contact with wild animals or short stays at children’s homes. A good programme will be glad you asked.

Questions travellers ask

What is conservation travel?

Travel where your stay helps protect the place you visit: by funding a conservation cause, keeping private land wild, or supporting the community that looks after it.

How does booking on Spekboom support conservation?

Every stay is linked to a named cause, and a share of each booking goes to it. The cause is shown on the listing before you book.

Can I volunteer through Spekboom?

No. Spekboom does not place volunteers. Contact the causes named on our stays directly; many run their own programmes or can point you to one.

Which wildlife experiences should I avoid?

Anything that puts you in contact with wild or captive predators, such as cub petting or walking with lions. These are tied to captive breeding and do not help conservation.
