Groot Winterhoek Wilderness is a rugged, high mountain landscape about 180km north of Cape Town near Porterville, known for its dramatic sandstone rock formations carved by wind and water, crystal-clear pools and sweeping fynbos plateaus. It is one of the Cape's classic wilderness areas, prized by hikers and those seeking real solitude.

The area is laced with hiking and overnight trails, including the popular walk to Die Hel pool and the De Tronk historical site, with excellent swimming in summer and superb dark-sky stargazing.

Accommodation is a set of simple, off-grid self-catering overnight huts, Disa, Klipspringer, Suikerbekkie and the larger Ribbok, positioned for hikers and wilderness lovers who want to disconnect. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for access.
