Liz at Lancaster is a four-star guesthouse on a large, leafy property in Craighall Park, one of Johannesburg's quiet Parks suburbs between Rosebank and Sandton. Liz Delmont has hosted here since 1994, and it still feels like a private garden rather than a hotel: seven units set around a lawn, a salt-water pool and a bird feeding tray, each with its own entrance opening onto an enclosed courtyard.
There are two en-suite rooms, three studio flatlets and two one-bedroom cottages. Every unit has a kitchenette or a full kitchen, so you can stay on a bed and breakfast or a self-catering basis, which makes it a favourite for long stays, visiting consultants and families. Breakfast, continental, health or full cooked, is served on the patio overlooking the garden, with a log fire in winter, or brought to your own courtyard.
More than 42 bird species have been seen or heard in the garden, and the guesthouse is 1.5 km from BirdLife South Africa's head office. Delta Park, a 15 minute walk away, has a list of more than 269 species, and Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden and Marievale Bird Sanctuary are an easy drive.
The practical side is well covered: fibre wi-fi that stays on during load-shedding, solar and gas back-up for hot water, filtered borehole and rain water that is safe to drink, secure off-street parking and a laundry service. The Earth Room is on one level with grab rails in the bathroom, and well-behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement.
