Sand Rivers sits on a bend of the Rufiji in Nyerere National Park, built so close to the water that it seems moored to the bank, with one whole side of the lodge open to the river. Nomad pioneered walking safaris in what was then the Selous Game Reserve, and the camp still runs on that footing: game drives, boat trips upstream through hippo water, walking with a guide, and fly camping out under mosquito net tents for those who want a night away from the lodge.

There are eight rooms in two settings. Five sit at river level, four standard Riverside Rooms and one family room, each with a private verandah and an ensuite bathroom. Three Hillside Suites stand above the camp with their own lounge and plunge pool, one of them a family suite. Rooms have proper showers with hot water on demand, flush loos, mosquito nets and a choice of double or twin, and an extra bed can be added for children aged eight to sixteen.

The camp keeps a swimming pool, a shop and a massage service, and laundry is included. Communal dining is the norm, with private dining when the weather allows, a choice dinner menu, and special diets and severe allergies catered for with notice. The area is quiet, with few other camps, which is much of the point.

Rates are quoted per person per night sharing on the Nomad Game Package, which includes a private guide and vehicle for game drives, all meals, house drinks and camp activities on a shared basis.
