Oor hierdie plek
Aasvogelkrans is a historic working farm established in 1834, 5 km from the village of Nieu-Bethesda in the Sneeuberg region of the Karoo. The farm spans 2,600 hectares of unspoilt nature with a 10 km stretch of the Gats River, breathtaking canyons and an amphitheatre of mountains, all beneath the imposing Aasvogelkrans, the "vulture cliffs" that gave the farm its name. Getting there is part of the adventure: several kilometres of dirt road and a river crossing (high-clearance vehicles recommended).
Two lovingly restored, air-conditioned and pet-friendly cottages, Hoopoe and Guineafowl, sleep two and four. Both feature open-plan living areas with double-glazed sliding doors onto wide wraparound stoeps, fully equipped kitchens, world-class Charnwood wood-burning stoves, superior 95% goose down duvets, electric blankets, deep vintage cast-iron baths and walk-in showers, with built-in braais for eating al fresco and a private stone hot tub at each cottage. Hoopoe Cottage, built nearly a century ago from farm stone and handmade bricks with Spanish reed ceilings and antique oak furniture, evokes the timeless elegance of a bygone era.
The birding is a genuine drawcard, with 116 species documented by the owners and a combined BirdLife South Africa checklist of 219 species for the farm, drawing on SABAP2 and eBird data. This is a regenerative farm of Karoo bush, riverine thornscrub, cliffs, river and dams: a Karoo Vulture Safe Zone, part of the Great Karoo Wilderness initiative and a member of the Camdeboo Mountain Zebra Protected Environment. Several pairs of Verreaux's Eagles and other raptors hold the cliffs, larks and pipits work the grasslands, four kingfisher species hunt the dams alongside egrets, herons, ducks and coots, and a Spotted Eagle-Owl is resident at the farmhouse. BirdLife lists Blue and Northern Black Korhaans and Ludwig's and Kori Bustards among the area's key species. Owner Kristin, a birder since 1995 with over 450 South African species, curates the farm list on iNaturalist and eBird and can point you to the right spots.
For guests who prefer not to fully self-cater, the farm's Karoo Kitchen offers pre-order farm meals, freshly baked sourdough, breakfast and braai hampers made with seasonal produce, and sundowner picnic baskets, and buying the farm's produce directly supports the regeneration of the veld.
Nieu-Bethesda itself is a village of artists, home to the Owl House, the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, galleries and cosy cafes, with cliff walks, San rock paintings, mountain biking and epic Karoo stargazing all around.
For the more adventurous there is wild camping too: the Poplar Forest site in a bend of the Gats River beneath red cliffs, and the Blacksmith site by the old homestead with its bush shower, kraals and pear trees (rates on enquiry, no signal at the sites). Kayaking, a secret swimming hole, cliff and dam walks, farm animal interactions, picnics and world-class Karoo stargazing round out the stay.
