About this place
Penwarn Farm Lodge lies in the Southern Drakensberg of KwaZulu-Natal, twenty-five kilometres from Underberg on the edge of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg World Heritage Site. The Nicholson family have farmed here for five generations, and the 3,400-hectare estate is still a working dairy and horse-breeding farm — reached by sixteen kilometres of gravel road and a four-kilometre driveway.
Six self-catering cottages sleep up to forty-five guests in total, from the couple’s thatch cottage Kingfisher to the seven-bedroom Penwarn Manor. Mthini Lodge, the lodge’s shining star, is perched above a lake with the Southern Drakensberg peaks beyond.
The farm has seven dams and eight kilometres of river for trout and bass fly fishing, kayaks, swimming in dams and a natural rock pool, sundowner drives in a Land Rover, Bushman rock-art trails and abundant birdlife — Blue and Wattled Crane, Cape and Bearded Vulture and four kingfisher species. A thatched chapel and lakeside lapa make it a sought-after wedding venue.

Underberg is a beautiful destination in KwaZulu-Natal, offering visitors access to local amenities, natural attractions, and the authentic character of South African life.
