Which parks and reserves are best for the Red-billed Quelea in South Africa?

Hosts on Spekboom have recorded the Red-billed Quelea at stays in or beside Kruger National Park, Anysberg Nature Reserve, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Phinda Private Game Reserve, Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve and Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park and other reserves. A record means a host has seen it on the property or nearby, which makes these the places to base yourself; it is never a guarantee of a sighting on any given day.

Where can you see the Red-billed Quelea in South Africa?

The Red-billed Quelea is most recorded in Limpopo (20% of records), KwaZulu-Natal (16% of records), Gauteng (16% of records), based on 2,001 iNaturalist observations. 64 places to stay on Spekboom in South Africa have recorded the Red-billed Quelea on site or nearby.

When is the best time to see the Red-billed Quelea?

The Red-billed Quelea is recorded throughout the year, so no month is the wrong month to look for it. For the parks where hosts record it most, these are the best seasons they give. Kruger National Park: Apr-Sep; Anysberg Nature Reserve: Autumn and spring, Mar-May, Sep-Nov; Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Aug-Oct, flowers, Mar-May; Phinda Private Game Reserve: year-round, dry season May-Sep. In the dry months animals concentrate at water and the grass is short.

What is the Red-billed Quelea?

The red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea), also known as the red-billed weaver or red-billed dioch, is a small-approximately 12 cm (4.7 in) long and weighing 15-26 g (0.53-0.92 oz)-migratory, sparrow-like bird of the weaver family, Ploceidae, native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It was named by Linnaeus in 1758, who considered it a bunting, but Ludwig Reichenbach assigned it in 1850 to the new genus Quelea.
