Trout Triangle

Trout Triangle

Mpumalanga highlands fly-fishing loop centred on Dullstroom.

100 km2–3 dayseasy

About this route

High in the Mpumalanga escarpment, Dullstroom sits at 2,000m above sea level with cold streams and stocked dams that draw fly-fishers from across the country year-round. The Trout Triangle is a loose loop centred on the village — pine plantations, indigenous grasslands, mist over the dams at dawn, fireplaces in every pub. A short break that feels much further from Johannesburg than the three-hour drive suggests.

Katrinasrust Country Estate

Katrinasrust Country Estate

Katrinasrust Trout Farm has been in the Brewer family for over 60 years, originally belonging to Eric Brewer's grandfather, Vernon. Eric took over the business in 1954 when he returned to South Africa with his family. In 1990, Tim Brewer, who had previously been working in exploration geology, returned to Katrinasrust with his wife, Lesley-Anne, and their three children to help his father run the trout business. Up until recently the farm produced in excess of 50 tonnes of fish per annum and largely dealt in live deliveries of trout to the local area and Mpumalanga province. More recently, however, the emphasis has gone over to recreation and Tim and Lesley-Anne have been working on developing the property as a haven for people wanting to escape to the country for some peace and quiet. Taking on this new direction for the farm is their daughter, Alice, and her fiance, Graeme, who moved back to Katrinasrust at the end of 2018.
