About this place
Mountain Zebra Rest Camp is the main camp of the Mountain Zebra National Park, set in the Karoo hills outside Cradock in the Eastern Cape. The park was established to save the Cape mountain zebra from extinction, and today its grassy plateaux and rocky slopes carry healthy numbers of this once highly endangered animal.
The camp occupies a fine position with wide views over the surrounding mountains and plains. Beyond the mountain zebra, the park holds black wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, springbok and buffalo, and cheetah and lion have been reintroduced, while the koppies and cliffs are good for raptors and other birdlife.
Accommodation is largely self-catering chalets, with a restaurant, shop and swimming pool at the camp. The Karoo setting brings hot summer days, crisp winter nights and exceptionally clear skies, making this a rewarding base for game drives, walks and quiet evenings under the stars.
