About this place
Rocherpan Nature Reserve is a coastal reserve teeming with birds and seasonal wildflowers, lying about 25km north of Velddrif on the Cape West Coast. Established in 1966 and paired with a marine reserve since 1988, it is built around a seasonal vlei that fills in winter and draws large numbers of waterbirds, with two bird hides for close viewing.
The reserve offers an unspoilt stretch of West Coast beach for walking and fishing, spring wildflower displays, and some of the darkest night skies within easy reach of Cape Town. Birdlife is the headline attraction, though sightings depend on water levels in the pan.
