About this place
Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve protects one of the largest surviving patches of indigenous Afromontane forest in the southern Cape, set against the Langeberg Mountains near Heidelberg. Originally known as Melkhoutskraal and a reserve since 1986, this 250 hectare forest of ancient yellowwood, stinkwood and ironwood is a declared World Heritage Site and a renowned birding destination, with forest birds, a canopy of giant trees and clear mountain streams.
The reserve offers forest and mountain walking trails, two bird hides, mountain biking and picnic sites, and it is the gateway to the Boosmansbos Wilderness trail in the peaks above. It is a cool, green contrast to the surrounding wheat and Karoo country.
