About this place
Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area protects a quiet 2,500 hectare stretch of the Garden Route coast between Sedgefield and Knysna, where a long beach, the Goukamma River estuary and dense dune forest of milkwood, yellowwood and candlewood meet. It is a World Heritage Site and a haven for more than 220 bird species, including the rare African black oystercatcher, alongside bushbuck, vervet monkey, honey badger and grysbok.
The reserve is a favourite for paddlers, walkers and birders. Visitors canoe the tannin-dark river, walk forest and coastal trails, fish the estuary and watch southern right whales pass offshore between June and November. Self-catering accommodation sits close to the water, from the rustic Mvubu Bush Camp and riverside cottages such as Blacktail, Stumpnose and Kabeljou to the secluded Otter's Rest and compact Fish Eagle Loft, plus the neighbouring Buffalo Valley timber lodges overlooking the river.
